Days 7-8 – It’s like Seattle here…

Travel tip:  If you come to Buchinger Wilhelmi on Bodensee, make sure you depart before the end of August! Weather definitely changes quickly here. We went from perfect sunny resort weather to clouds and rain — like Seattle!  We’ve got this for the next few days. We had a little break from the rain today … Read more

Should you switch out a doctor you don’t like?

I have not had great historical success with doctors in the US in treating my diabetes.  My doctors have been too quick to insist on prescribing drugs that do not work over the long term for my situation, and they have not changed their views quickly enough to match as new data emerges.  Without exception, … Read more

Days 4-6 Still Alive and Well!

Thanks to all those who messaged me privately about the temporary pause in blogging! We are still alive and well! We’ve been immersed in the Buchinger experience, and we’ve been taking advantage of the program! Even though we’re not allowed to use mobile phones outside our rooms, I had to use something to keep track … Read more

Day 3 – Walk good 👍, Enema bad 👎

Today was good and bad. Walk good.  👍 On Sundays, the walks here at Buchinger Wilhelmi start at 8:30am instead of the usual 6am time both to attract a bigger group and to allow for longer excursions. Today, we went to the highest lookout point between Lake Constance and the Danube, referred to locally as … Read more

Day 2 – Almost too comfortable!

I was not looking forward to Day 2 of the fast.  At Buchinger Wilhelmi, that fear is unfounded. The “Do it Yourself” Experience I’ve tried water fasting before on my own, and Day 2 is always miserable.  Day 1 is usually easy because you get to burn your glycogen stores.  It’s Day 2 when your … Read more

Our first sightseeing excursions

Surprisingly, we got to take a little break from the pure clinical fasting experience to enjoy a little bit of the area. Every day here at Buchinger-Wilhelmi, there are guided walks from 6am-8am.  This morning we couldn’t join because I had my first laboratory appointment at 7:40am.  Instead, my wife and I went for a … Read more

Digestive Rest Day

Today was our “digestive rest day.”  The concept is to choose one main food staple to eat throughout the day to prepare the body for fasting. Choices were: fruit potatoes rice oatmeal For me, Dr. Lischke recommended oatmeal because it works best for diabetics.  My wife chose potatoes. My breakfast was oatmeal with a cinnamon-apple … Read more

Our home for the next 28 days!

The adventure begins!  Today was “arrival day” at Buchinger-Wilhelmi. Overall, the 100 years of experience here shows in their execution.  The staff here is well-versed at dealing with travelers from abroad.  Once arriving in Zurich, I was welcomed with a friendly phone call from a fluent English speaker who told us where our driver was … Read more

Leaving for Buchinger-Wilhelmi fasting retreat today!

Today is the day that my wife and I are leaving for a 28-day fasting program at Buchinger-Wilhelmi to (hopefully!) reverse my Type II diabetes.  We booked this trip back in April, and since then many people have asked me to chronicle our experiences.  As such, I started this blog, and I’m announcing it today! … Read more

About to head off to a fasting retreat!

My wife and I will be headed to Germany for a 28-day fasting retreat!  (She is along for moral support!) People often ask “why so long?” I’ll cover more about the “why” and “how” of fasting in future posts.  However, to net it out: I have excess fat in my liver, like many other TOFI … Read more

Diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

In my last post, I discussed the “fat on the inside” of people with diabetes.  One of the most insidious places for this fat to live is in the liver!  Science is now showing the relationship between liver fat and diabetes, and the potential cure for both — fasting! Diabetes and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease … Read more

TOFI – Thin on the outside, Fat on the inside

When I was first diagnosed with diabetes in 2003, my doctors were puzzled.  While most of their patients were obese, I was a so-called “normal weight” (BMI < 25) patient.  How did I get diabetes at my BMI and and at my age (36 at the time…)? Today, much of the mystery is solved.  I … Read more

Two videos to watch for diabetes care

For anyone interested in fasting and treatment of diabetes, I recommend two videos out of the UK. Eat, Fast, and Live Longer Eat, Fast, and Live Longer is well known for educating people about the 5:2 diet, where subjects can pick 2 days per week to consume just 600 calories (500 for a woman), and … Read more
